The proposal sought to erect a 15 metre x 2 metre internally illuminated major promotion panel sign across the northern face of the railway bridge suspended above Kings Way, Melbourne. The application was met with great opposition from Melbourne City Council on the belief that the sign would result in visual clutter, represents a significant visual intrusion to the surrounding area and would cause a distraction to road users. The sign is appropriately sited above the approaching carriageway, sits within the silhouette of the bridge and will bring positive benefits to the area by providing visual interest to an otherwise drab structure. The Tribunal overturned Council’s decision and ordered that a permit be issued for this sign.
